Peugeot has now manufactured its 5 millionth HDi diesel engine for its cars.
The making of this engine commenced in September 1998 when they were
originally made for the 406 model..

Today's production of 8,000 each and every day compares with a mere100 per day back then.
The capactities now on offer are:

1.4 cc
1.6 cc
2.0 cc
2.2 cc

Half of all current engines models made are in the 2.0 capacity.
Channel 4 t.v. reports that the 70bhp units are fairly unresponsive
but the 2.0 hdi produces 90bhp although with some noise.
They also mention the new 1.4 HDi engine coming out imminently.

52% of new Peugeot passenger models in 2003 were powered by diesel.
In Britain the diesel engine continues its upward trend with 23% in 2003, 27.3% in 2003.
This is expected to rise to 31% in 2004.

8th September 2004, Peugeot announced a new emmission reduction system,
alowing drivers to turn off their engines when they are not moving forward.
Affectionately known as stop and start, it turns the car's engine to standby at red lights.
It will be available from Novemeber and it is expected to lower fuel consumption by up to 10% in urban areas and 15% in traffic.

With regrd to specific models the GTi 180, although basicallly the same
1998cc, has been rejigged with the head offering modified intake and exhaust flows.
Also another big change is the variable valve system on the intake.
This is all controlled by the new engine management system.

The results?
Dramatic.
The standard GTi offered 138bhp .
The reworked engine now offers 180bhp at 7000 rpm
